Damascus History

Damascus, Maryland was founded in the year 1816. Its founder, Edward Hughes, was a war veteran. It was named Damascus (or, "The Pleasant Plains of Damascus") after Syria's capital city. It was officially a town from the years 1890 to 1914, but its incorporation was later withdrawn at the request of the Damascus residents.

The Damascus Historic District was removed from the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, for the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission found that it did not meet the necessary criteria. Despite this, Damascus still has a number of historic buildings still standing.
