Rockville History

Like many other Maryland areas, Rockville was once home to several Native American tribes, which were later forced out by European settlers. The first buildings that would make Rockville were first constructed in the early 18th century. Initially part of Frederick County, Rockville was later split into the portion that would make up Montgomery County today. However, it wasn't officially known as Rockville until 1803, named so after Rock Creek, which runs down the east side.

Rockville would house soldiers during the Civil War, but would see major economic growth only in the 1940s and 1950s. There are several buildings in Rockville listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Beall-Dawson House, Old St. Mary's Church, and Glenview Mansion.
