The county seat of Anne Arundel County is Annapolis. This city is also conveniently the Maryland state capital. The Chesapeake Bay coastline makes up the eastern boundary of the county, with its southernmost tip ending right below Holland Point. To the south is Calvert County, which includes the census-designated places of Dunkirk and Owings. Anne Arundel County’s western border follows the Patuxent River all the way up towards the Patapsco River, which it then loosely follows.


Here are some of the major roads and highways in Anne Arundel County: 

  • I-97, which runs north to south before merging into US Route 50 outside of Annapolis

  • US 50 / US 301 / John Hansen Highway, which runs east to west through the county from Washington, D.C., and then into the Delmarva Peninsula

  • I-195, which connects to the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport

  • I-695, which runs from the northwest to northeast, and circles around Baltimore

  • I-895, which enters the country from the north and quickly merges into the I-97

The big city of Annapolis offers the most choice for buyers in terms of property type. Here you’ll find the greatest number of condos for sale, although they are quite rare in the county in general. Anne Arundel County is primarily home to single-family homes and townhomes, with the latter found obviously in the county’s more urban areas. Anne Arundel County History

Anne Arundel County was named after the second Baron Baltimore’s wife, Lady Anne Arundell. Although originally part of St. Mary’s County, Anne Arundel County split from that region in 1650 and became its own. 


From then, it was an important site during many wars, including the English Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. Because of this county’s long history, there are over 100 buildings in Anne Arundel County registered on the National Register of Historic Places, and 12 historic landmarks.
