Dauphin County History
Dauphin County was established in 1785 and named after Louis Joseph Xavier Francois, the dauphin of France and eldest son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. It was primarily an agricultural center until the 19th century when the Pennsylvania Canal and Pennsylvania Railroad were built, allowing Harrisburg to become one of the most industrialized cities in the Northeast.
