Cumberland County Information

Cumberland County is located west of Philadelphia in the scenic Cumberland Valley in Southwest Pennsylvania. It is part of the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area.The county seat is the borough of Carlisle, which dates back to the early 1700s. 

 

Cumberland County is bordered by Blue Mountain to the north, the Susquehanna River to the east, the Blue Ridge Mountains to the south, and the historic borough of Shippensburg to the west. The Appalachian Trail runs through the center of the county.

Cumberland County History

Cumberland County dates back to the 1730s when Irish, Scottish, German and English immigrants began to settle in the area. They were attracted to the area for its fertile fields and abundant land that was perfect for farming. Shippensburg was the original county seat, but this changed to Carlisle in 1751.

 

The Carlisle Barracks were built in 1757 after Benjamin Franklin negotiated a treaty with several tribes in the area. It is now the second oldest military post in the United States. Other historic sites include the courthouse in Carlisle that was built in 1847, the grave of war hero Molly Pitcher, and the Big Spring Presbyterian Church.
