History of Kent County

Kent County boasts a rich and fruitful history - when in 1777 the town of Dover was designated as the capital of Delaware.

In 1787 Delaware was the first state to officially approve of the U.S. Constitution and became “the First State”.

In the 1960s, Dover in Kent County was a center of manufacturing for spacesuits worn by NASA astronauts in the Apollo moon flights by ILC Dover. The suit - named the “A7L” - was first used and flown on the Apollo mission in 1967, worn by iconic Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The company still manufactures spacesuits to this day.
