Morgan County, located in West Virginia’s eastern panhandle, was formed in 1820 from portions of neighboring Hampshire and Berkeley Counties and was named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, one of the American Revolutionary War’s greatest battlefield strategists.
Morgan County, which is home to the towns of Berkeley Springs (its county seat) and Paw Paw (the namesake of the Paw Paw Tunnel), has a total area of 230 square miles, including 229 square miles of land and 0.5 square miles of water.
Located in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle region, Morgan County has many rivers and streams known for their boating, fishing, wildlife and scenery, including Potomac River, Cacapon River, Cherry Run, Sir Johns Run, Sleepy Creek, Meadow Branch and Warm Spring Run.
U.S. Route 522 (US 522) follows the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians north and east through Morgan County from the southeast to the northwest. With no east–west highway in the area, West Virginia Route 9 (WV 9) serves as a major east–west artery between Morgan, Berkeley and Jefferson Counties.
