Lancaster County History

Lancaster County’s ideal location amid fertile fields and along the Susquehanna River has always made it an attractive place for settlers. For thousands of years Native American groups such as the Shawnee, Susquehannock and Nanticoke occupied the area.

European people began to settle in Lancaster County in the early 1700s. They came mainly from Germany, France, England, Scotland and Wales and included many Amish people who were seeking religious freedom. Like the native groups before them, the Europeans found the land ideal for farming, fishing and hunting.

Lancaster County played an important part in the history of the Underground Railroad. The county sits just north of the Mason-Dixon line, so it was a key entry point for slaves escaping to the north. Many residents in the area opposed slavery, so they aided fugitive slaves seeking refuge.
