Arlington County Properties & Real Estate

Arlington County is part of the state of Virginia and is self-governing. The more urban parts of the county are located in the south and east region, whilst the county’s residential and forested areas are located generally towards the north and west.

As of 2020, the estimated population of Arlington County is 236,434.

The boundaries of Arlington County are marked by George Washington Memorial Parkway, which extends from the northern tip all the way down along the Potomac River. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is within the bounds of Arlington County, with Alexandria to the south and Fairfax County bordering all other sides (with the exception of the city of Falls Church).

The major roads and highways in Arlington County are as follows:

  • George Washington Memorial Parkway, which runs along the District of Columbia border.
  • Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway / I-395, which runs through Alexandria, into Arlington County, and then into Washington, DC.
  • Custis Memorial Parkway / I-66, which runs from the District of Columbia into Arlington County, and exits into Fairfax County.
  • Richmond Highway / I-1, which goes around The Pentagon and then south into Alexandria.

Arlington County is located right against the Washington, DC border and is close to other major cities, such as Alexandria. Because of this, residents can easily travel in and around the area to experience even more recreational opportunities, shopping, dining, and more. The county also has an intricate transit network.

Real Estate in Arlington County

The most urban places within Arlington County, such as Crystal City, are characterized by their contemporary high-rise buildings, which are their primary property type. However, Arlington County does well to preserve its historic residential areas. Going beyond the downtown core gives way to beautiful, historic single-family homes. There are also a number of luxury, contemporary style homes.

Typically, you’ll find residential streets to be quiet and lined with mature trees. Neighborhoods such as the (very desirable) Bluemont are especially known for these characteristics. The homes in Arlington County are built in a number of styles, from single-family homes to townhomes.

The historic district of Ashton Heights, for example, has a strict architectural style guide in place in order to maintain a cohesive aesthetic. This is because many of the homes were built between the years of 1920 to 1945. Homes range from Bungalow, Cape Cod, and Colonial styles (most prevalent) to Tudor Revival and Dutch Colonial (less prevalent), with even some Contemporary styles mixed in.

In general, there are many Bungalow style homes in Arlington County. Lot sizes vary, as this is dependent on proximity to the bustling, urban areas. Colonial Revival style homes, specifically with red brick exteriors and chimneys, are another popular home type.

Arlington County History

The region of Arlington County was initially part of the capital during its inception. It was later separated from this when the Organic Act of 1801 was passed, but wouldn’t separate from Alexandria until 1870.

Arlington County was given its name in 1920 in honor of Robert E. Lee, a Confederate War general. Arlington House was the name of his estate.

This region was an important site during the Civil War, and therefore many historical monuments, landmarks, and buildings remain.

Now, Arlington County is where several international companies and federal agencies are headquartered. Learn more about relocating due to a career change in our blog post.
