Wicomico County History

While the city of Salisbury was incorporated as soon as the year 1854, Wicomico County was not created until 1867—and was formed out of the surrounding Somerset and Worcester counties.

The county itself was named after the Wicomico River, which runs through Salisbury and exits into the bay. The name comes from the Algonquin words, “wicko mekee.” There have been two great fires and a flood that have destroyed portions of Salisbury, but each time it has been rebuilt.
