The area that would become the town of Milton was first settled back in 1675. Originally the community was vital to the shipbuilding industry in this part of Delaware, its position at the beginning of the wide river providing direct access to the waters of Delaware Bay.
This proud heritage is evident in many places across the small community. Milton may be small, but it's charming downtown area has been made a historic district, while Milton and the surrounding area is home to over 200 historic buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
Milton may be particularly appealing to American history buffs, but it will also appeal to beach lovers and the ecologically minded. The small community has built a sterling reputation as a jumping off point for both the expansive nature preserves found in nearly all the directions, as well as the pristine beaches lining Delaware's Atlantic coast.
Milton real estate is both incredible varied and infinitely appealing to a broad range of tastes. The community has been able to maintain a wonderful and sedate, small-town atmosphere, while still providing every basic necessity, top rated schools with streets filled with friendly neighbors.
Interested buyers will find a sampling of just about everything. Milton’s established historic pedigree means the central portions of the community are littered with charming character homes featuring classic architectural styles. If these walls could talk, they’d have a few stories to tell. These well loved homes demonstrate a true pride of ownership, many with artfully updated interiors. There are even fantastic examples of home with stunning waterfront views, overlooking either the riverfront or Wagamons Pond, closer to the center of town.
Of course, there are also numerous examples of newer builds, mostly in newer suburban communities on the outskirts of town. These properties boast the newest, green building materials and beautiful design features. Further out of town, there are plenty of available farms and acreage properties for those looking for even more space.
The attractions awaiting residents and visitors of Milton are many. As we’ve noted, fascinating historic properties line the central commercial district of the small town, many housing smaller, family-run businesses. This includes an interesting selection of boutiques, restaurants, cafes and more, just waiting to be explored.
Just like many of the other small communities in this portion of Delaware, Milton sees its populations swell in the summertime. The village is well established as a preferred jumping off point for exploration of one of the numerous nature preserves, such as Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, as well as the iconic nearby beaches, such as Broadkill Beach and Primehook Beach.
Locals love to celebrate nature. Governors Walk is a wonderfully scenic walking path that winds along the shores of Broadkill River, starting in the center of town. Milton also hosts an annual canoe and kayak race that starts at the beginning of the Broadkill River in the center of town, before making its way through the Prime Hook Nature Preserve and out into the open waters of Delaware Bay.
