Carroll County Information
Carroll County is a county located in north-central Maryland. The county seat of Carroll County is Westminster, approximately 40 minutes, or 35 miles, from downtown Baltimore. This county touches the Maryland-Pennsylvania border in the north, but is surrounded by the following counties: Baltimore County (to the east), Howard County (to the south), and Frederick County (to the west)
As of 2021, the population of Carroll County, Maryland is roughly 173,800.
There are three main roads in Carroll County which lead to either Baltimore or Washington, D.C. Maryland Route 140 connects Taneytown to Westminster and Finksburg, before continuing to Baltimore. Maryland Route 97 travels north-south, from Union Mills to Westminster, and then down to the D.C. Metro area. Maryland Route 30 is the shortest highway and it travels from Pennsylvania though Manchester and Hampstead, before also winding towards Baltimore.
Carroll County was established in 1837 and named after Charles Carroll, one of the signatories on the American Declaration of Independence.
While the county is relatively rural, its economy is thriving. Carroll County is home to over 4,870 businesses, and the largest employer in the county is the Carroll County Public School system. Carroll County is conveniently located just a short drive from Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Pennsylvania.

Carroll County History
Before European settlement, the area was home to several Native American peoples, including the Lenape and the Susquehannock. Tribes had developed an intricate trail system, many of which would later become roads when colonists arrived.
Carroll County was founded in the year 1837, and was composed of predominantly German and English settlers.
