During the financial crisis of 2008, pessimism and panic loomed within the real estate market. But Creig and Carla Northrop, Founders of Northrop Realty, A Long & Foster Company, chose not to participate in any of that negativity.

"Early one morning, we assembled our team at a local movie theater. We gathered everyone together to watch the movie Invincible," Greig remembers.

Based on the true story of Vincent Papale, Invincible is a compelling movie about his improbable, against all-odds journey of trying out and making the Philadelphia Eagles football team. "It's a great movie about having heart and not giving up," says Creig.

The engaging action on the screen wasn't the only inspiration the team members gained that day, as Creig rose to his feet and challenged his team. "I told them that we can't control what is happening in the world outside. But that we can control what we do for our clients."

The team went on to take the field day after day, creating a true legacy of achievement within the industry.

Signs of Success

In 1985, Creig earned his real estate license, and 15 years later, he and Carla founded Northrop Realty. "Since we started, our team has been ranked number one in the nation three times," Creig smiles.

In 2005, Northrop Realty was the number-one team in Maryland based on volume, according to REALTrends and The Wall Street Journal. It was the first of 11 times that the team has earned that distinction. And, in 2018, Northrop Realty was established as a brokerage and was named the number-one Specialty Brokerage in the nation for 2019.

"Carla and I have always figured that if we were going to do real estate, then why not strive to be the best? We have a passion for teaching, and we want to create a legacy of truly supporting others," says Crieg.

They have done just that. Behind the numbers is a sincere and active interest in fostering an environment where people can be supported to learn and succeed. The number of teams in their brokerage has grown from 20 to 40 today.

"We offer client care coordinators for each agent," Creig explains. "We offer in-house staging consultants and a luxury concierge, as well as a full marketing department, including graphic designers and social media along with IT and training resources. Knowledge is confidence. Confidence is trust. And trust is a sale," says Creig.

The brokerage has tripled in size in three years. Today, there are more than 325 agents supported by more than 75 professional staff. And Northrop Realty has become the Official Real Estate Brokerage of the Maryland Terrapins.

The cumulative results of the many individual agents are truly staggering. In 2021, Northrop Realty recorded over $2 billion in sales volume and sold or placed 1,268 homes under contract in one week or less.

"Carla and I love what we do. This isn't just a job for us. The harder the problems are, the more excited we are to find the solutions. We have a passion and energy for people, and we love making their dreams come true," Creig emphasizes.

A Wonderful Life

Away from work, Creig and Carla treasure the time they have with their family, including their children— William Miller, Kristin Miller, Jake Northrop, and Victoria Northrop.

In addition, Creig and Carla are joined at work by their mothers-Elaine Northrop and Patricia Hicks. "I learned everything from my mom. So, when Carla and I started our team in 2000, we competed against my mom for a couple of years, and that was our hardest competition," Creig smiles.

"Then, after two years, she joined us. Patricia joined us, too. Now we are lucky to have family working with us."

In their free time, they enjoy spending time with family and friends. Creig also has a passion for playing tennis and reading, whereas Carla has a passion for interior design and volunteering. When it comes to giving back to the community, some of their favorite organizations to support include the Alzheimer's Association, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and Toys for Tots.

Driven by Integrity

Those who know Creig and Carla can see the integrity that drives their efforts. "Creig and I are going to do our best for our employees, individual agents, and team," Carla says. "We wouldn't do anything to guide them in a way that we wouldn't do for ourselves and our family. We have a true love for helping people achieve their goals, no matter what."

No matter what field you're in, that's what invincible leadership looks like.
